Awakeners
Just one e from victory
Did you mean Awakeneers? (Rhymes with: the engineers that clean the ears of mountaineers. Cheers!)
You're nine tenths of the way there! The name Awakeners (those who awakens others) is closely related, yet importantly different than Awakeneer (A word invented by us that combines the sense of the word awakening with that of 'mountaineer' describing a calling and an enthusiastic striving for excellence in a given field.)
The word Awakening can give the impression of a singular event or a state that is conclusively attained, but the reality of trying to wake up seems more like a continuing journey along what might be an infinite gradient of awareness, so the word awakeneering refers to that whole very long trip.
Furthermore, waking up is seriously no-picnic. Thinking you are capable of actually waking up anybody else in addition is saying a lot! So, though it seems a noble aim to be awakeners, we only claim to be awakeneers.
The tragedy of all this deeply pondered nuance is — what with background noise, hearing loss, spelling-loss, inattention, forgetfulness and who-knows-what-all — we are repeatedly announced and referred to as "The Awakeners".
No hard feelings! An innocent mistake in pronunciation or spelling is nothing to get hot under the collar about. But the whole point of a name is to be able to be called and identified by it, which doesn't really work if it drops a letter and turns into a different word. So we put up this website as a friendly sign-post proclaiming to the world the one true spelling of Awakeneers in the hope that someone searching for our music — after remembering or hearing about us as the Awakeners — will find their way!
Frequently asked questions:
How did you come up with this strange/beautiful band name?
Slowly. Over the course of several years we compiled a database of 700 band name ideas, built a custom online voting system with many exotic algorithms, surveyed our listeners, and had numerous all-day meetings, and finally settled on Awakeneers (not Awakeners).
Does this name mean that y'all are Woke?
No... such omnibus politicalized categorizations seldom seem accurate, more frequently they're used by the unscrupulously powerful to divide and throw dirt in the eyes of the populace. But perhaps I once dreamt that I woke one morning and wondered if I was sleeped or woke, but then I went back to bed and woke to a dream of sleeping.
Are you part of x religion?
Nope. Contrary to our well-scrubbed appearance, we're not actually affiliated with any religious organization. Who would have guessed?
For the Record
We don't want to compete with or step on anyone's toes. At the time we chose the name Awakeneers for our music there was, to our knowledge, no music group on the internet with the name Awakeners or Awakeneers (which was part of the reason we chose this name).
Congratulations!
You are now exquisitely well-educated about one of the most common misspelling in West Coast folk music!
